Tommaso Massimiliano Alfì is a composer and sound designer based in Turin.
He has collaborated with various musicians and artists in the fields of music, video art, and cinema.
His approach is influenced by his main project, "MVRGN," which explores a contemporary, hybrid, and electronic
compositional language.
In his most recent works, he collaborated with artist and friend dariya trubina on the visual and sound installation
"[threaded or shredded] une fois de plus, sans":
a four-channel structure of contemporary composed music and sound design
installed for the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
[threaded or shredded] une fois de plus, sans
on tenter hooks
[threaded or shredded] une fois de plus, sans. She uses the plain weave, the strongest, simplest and most ancient of weaving techniques. She occasionally intervenes in
it, pulling at the threads, un-evening the pattern and adjusting the shape in a way that is both patient and slightly
violent, challenging its pre-determined form.
Treating material as language and language as material, she is interested in translation, taking systems of organisation
and shifting them just slightly, lightly curving their learned meaning.
Tenter hooks [from Medieval Latin tentōrium, from Latin tendere to stretch] were used in the process of making woollen
or linen cloth which needed to be washed, stretched and dried under tension, to retain its shape and size. The wet cloth
was stretched over a wooden frame - a tenter - using the hooks (nails), and left to dry. Over the centuries of using
this method of controlled drying, the expression 'to be on tenterhooks' acquired a figurative meaning in English. It is
used to describe a state of uneasiness, anxiety, pressure, or suspense. This expression is often misinterpreted as
"tender hooks", creating an eggcorn — a substitution of an element as people try to make sense of a phrase that uses a
term unfamiliar to them.
In double weaving one layer covers another, preventing access to a part of the process. Tension, errors, gaps can be
checked by using a small mirror, placed in the opening between the upper and the lower layers of the weave. An indirect
ingress: a material and temporal reflection of the process. A rear view. A translation.
dariya likes to rearrange glossaries, grids and gaps in her close readings of architecture and built environments. She
indicates the performative potential of space, working with object-based compositions, voice, sound and movement.
Stretching the codes of repetition.

Night Shift
Nino works the night shift as a receptionist in a 2-star hotel.
He is torn between insomnia, a harmful routine, and nostalgia for easier times.
Besides brief and eerie encounters with customers, he spends the night trying to find ways to stay awake.
When he is not lost in scrolling, binge-watching, or drinking coffee, he walks around the hotel experiencing the
nocturnal oddities that flow through rooms and corridors.
Grey walls, rotten interiors, and empty spaces seem to translate the palette of emotions shared by all the inhabitants
of the hotel.
Using the very same digital tools that force him into alienation, Nino records and listens to his most intimate
confessions.
This acoustic diary will be his only lighthouse in a hazy and lonely dimension.

Sleeping Close
"Sleeping Close" Italy, France 2023, 109', 2:1, Full HD, stereo sound, v.o Italian, with english subtitles
In human adversities, there are 'topoi' that recur like variations of the same melody. Growth, pain, sacrifice, choices
and, above all, love, are present in everyone's existence in a thousand forms, similar and yet unique. With the
fragments of many lives, it would be possible to compose a single one in which to find the echo of all the others. In
the chapters of 'Sleeping close', a woman experiences the stages of her own evolution through the changing features of
fourteen female protagonists. She dies a symbolic death, only to be resurrected at the end with all those women who have
gone before. A poetic journey into the inner world of the human being, in which seemingly insignificant reveal to us the
submerged stream of a fragile humanity in search of itfself.
